One of Supernatural’s executive producers has weighed in on why fans probably won’t see Jeffrey Dean Morgan return as John Winchester for the show’s finale.
At the annual Television Critics Association press tour this weekend, executive producer Eugenie Ross-Leming explained Morgan’s cameo last season was too perfect of a send-off.
In Supernatural’s 300th episode “Lebanon,” John Winchester was pulled out of the past and brought to Sam and Dean’s present — where his wife and their mother, Mary, was also still alive. While everyone hoped the reunion would be permanent, John ultimately had to be brought back to his time before things changed for the worse. What followed was an emotional final dinner with the family, who hadn’t all been together since Sam was a baby. As Ross-Leming said, it’s a tough act to follow.
The upcoming 15th season of Supernatural will be its last, so fans are holding out for a number of returning faces. As with John’s return, Season 14 already featured a number of cameos from fan favorites, likely designed to put a button on the characters as the show heads towards the end. Of course, there’s always the possibility of Supernatural spinoffs, which could give certain characters another chance to shine.
Returning Thursday, October 10 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW for its final season, Supernatural stars Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, Misha Collins and Alexander Calvert.
